‘United States of Love’, ‘The Handmaiden’ and ’24 Wochen’ are the winners of the LOOK! competition and ‘Welcome to Norway’ won the Taste of Europe competition!
Last Saturday, at the Ostend Film Festival the winners of the Look!-competition and the Taste of Europe competition were announced. The award for Best Production Design was given to ‘United States of Love’ by Tomasz Wasilewski. The Best D.O.P. – award went to ‘The Handmaiden’ by Park Chan-wook, distributed by Cinéart. Last but not least, the award for Best Film was handed over to ’24 Wochen’ by Anne Zohra Berrached, which is distributed by September Film. The 10th edition of Belgiums Ostend Film Festival did prestigiously end with the Worldpremiere of Nathalie Teirlincks feature debut called ‘Past Imperfection’ on its closing night.
The Ostend Film Festival celebrated its 10th edition and was a successful event for Belgiums film Industry. Since three years, the festival installed two unique sections, Taste of Europe (TOE) and LOOK!. The TOE selection contains six European films, with no local distribution network yet. Co-programmer is Ilse Schooneknaep. The audience, under the chairmanship of actor and comedian Sebastien Dewaele (CAFARD), chose ‘Welcome to Norway’, directed by Rune Denstad Langlo as Best Movie. Due to this Audience Award, the film will be rewarded with a 2500 euro reward and a contract with the Belgian distribution network Telenet for Video- On- Demand.
The LOOK! – selection is a unique and innovative competition in Europe that emphasizes the cinematographic importance of the D.O.P and the production design team of each film. For this fifth edition, six films were selected, chosen by the artistic director of the Film Festival, Peter Craeymeersch, and by Nikolaj Nikitin, programmer of the Berlinale. A professional jury presided by chairman Grimur Hakonarsson (director of Rams) – and with production designer Jette Lehman (Melancholia), photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, D.O.P. Walter Van den Ende (No Man’s Land) and the master of the Festival Kevin Janssens as members – chose the following winners: Best Production Design was given to ‘United States of Love’ by Tomasz Wasilewski. The Best D.O.P. – award went to ‘The Handmaiden’ by Chan-Wook Park, distributed by Cinéart. Last but not least the Award for Best Film was handed over to ’24 Wochen’ by Anne Zohra Berrached.
More than 35.000 visitors attended this jubilee edition and the Film Festival was proud to welcome some acclaimed international directors such as Ira Sachs, Roberto Ando and Luke Scott. Also internationally acclaimed actress Evelyne Brochu was happy to attend the red carpet of the closing film ‘Past imperfection’ by Nathalie Teirlinck. Saturday evening, the Ensors, the Flemish Film Awards were distributed during a big live streamed show at the Ostend Casino. The Ardennes, a dark lovestory by Robin Pront, starring Veerle Baetens and Kevin Janssens, won most of the Ensors, for instance Best Film, Best Actor and Best DOP.
The 11th edition of the Ostend Film Festival will take place from September 8th till September 16th, 2017.
