Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan approaches the Spanish Crown to request support for his expedition. He succeeds in convincing the court and sets sail with a manned fleet into the wild seas, heading to the east. His ambition? To discover and conquer the world. But it doesn't go as smoothly as he thought. The Filipino director Lav Diaz paints an intimate and tense portrait of a man who pursues his idealistic dream, but he is soon confronted with the harsh reality: colonial violence, betrayal and existential doubt. ‘Magellan’ takes a critical look at the European conquest of the 16th century. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded with a Golden Spike in Valladolid.
