Switzerland, 1940s. While the country is officially neutral in the Second World War, the inhabitants of a small Swiss village cannot ignore the atrocities taking place in Europe. But when horrific events occur within their own closed Protestant community, criticism is not tolerated. Fifteen-year-old Emma, who is pregnant after a brutal rape, experiences this firsthand. Instead of silently accepting her fate, she seeks out subtle ways to resist.
With her feature film ‘À bras-le-corps’, the Swiss Marie-Elsa Sgualdo pays a tribute to all the women who have to fight in silence for their own autonomy. This historical drama about trauma and resistance premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
