On the closing night of the Ostend Film Festival (FFO), the entire audiovisual sector comes together for the Ensor Awards Gala. Alongside the celebrations, FFO also sets aside time for reflection and dialogue during the Ensors Debate. Drawing on the nominated films, the debate asks a central question: what does this selection reveal about the current audiovisual landscape?

At the upcoming edition, on Saturday 29 January, Ensors will be awarded for Best Performance in a Leading Role and Best Performance in a Supporting Role for both films and television series. In this way, the Ensors follow the example of the Golden Calves and the Berlin Film Festival. Five acting performances (M/V/X) will be nominated for each of these awards. New this year is that remakes are now also eligible for nomination. In addition, the Ensors for 'Debut of the Year' and 'International Breakthrough of the Year' will be given a modified interpretation.
‘Lazzaro felice’ tells the fable-like story of Lazzaro, a young and naïve farmer. He grew up in an isolated pastoral village of Inviolata, ruled by the awful Marchesa Alfonsina de Luna. When the young nobleman Tancredi asks Lazzaro for help in staging his own kidnapping, an unusual bond develops between the two. Their unlikely friendship creates a remarkable shift in time and space in this beautiful, modern Italian fairy tale. Alice Rohrwacher won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival for this film.
At the height of his career, celebrated theatre maker, filmmaker, and writer, Marcel Pagnol is commissioned to write a literary column about his own childhood, his beloved Provence, and his first loves. As he begins writing, he is joined by little Marcel, the child he once was. Words begin to flow and memories surface: the first sound film, big film studios, and his deep friendships with actors. A born storyteller becomes the hero of his own story.

In 1990s New York, young police officer Lucas is given a special assignment. He must seduce gay men and lure them to public toilets under false pretenses so that they can be arrested. Lucas dutifully carries out his tasks until he meets his next mark. The charming Andrew manages to make him question his own identity and suppressed desires. Carmen Emmi paints in her feature debut ‘Painclothes’ a world where the boundaries of morality, masculinity, and identity are explored. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
After a breakup, casting agent Julia moves to Brussels. There, she becomes the roommate of Eliott, a quiet but driven microbiologist who will soon leave for his doctoral research in Greenland. Their growing friendship creates space to reflect on both their professional and personal life choices. Leni Huyghe has made several short films and contributed in 2020 to the documentary ‘J’attendrai le jour et la nuit’ about the COVID crisis in residential care homes. ‘Real Faces’ is her first feature film as a director. She wrote the screenplay together with Vincent Vanneste.
Ann Lee and the Shakers is not the name of the band, but of a Christian sect and his leader. In the 18th century, Ann Lee (a fiery Amanda Seyfried) flees Manchester and proclaims her religious message in the New World. Her followers, who worship her as the second incarnation of Christ, believe in an utopian society and practice their faith through music and dance. But the Shaker-movement is also plagued by religious persecution in the New World. On March 12, 2022, the Flemish film and television prizes, also known as The Ensors, were awarded. After last year's digital edition, Kursaal Ostend welcomed 800 attendees this year.
No profession appeals more to the imagination than that of acting. On the occasion of their latest work, FFO brought together two actors/actresses to talk uninterruptedly about their expertise, passion and the film of their lives.
Every year, the winners within the LOOK!-, COOP!- and SOON!- competition are announced during Film Festival Ostend (FFO). This year, ‘The Zone of Interest’, ‘Tiger Stripes’ and ‘Toll’ are going home with awards.
Jaak Van Assche was the first to take the stage. The 80-year-old actor played in countless theatre, film and TV productions. He became known to the general public for his legendary roles as Jean De Pesser from 'De Collega's', Fernand Costermans from 'F.C. De Kampioenen' and recently Frans Van As from 'De Zonen van Van As'.
In the LOOK!-competition, a professional international jury will award the Best Film, in which the image lifts the story to a higher level in a striking or influential way. The UFK Press Award will be chosen by the Union of Film Critics.
All new films screened during FFO stand a chance of winning the Nationale Loterij Audience Award.
